Downpipe work covers the vertical rainwater route from the gutter outlet to the discharge point. A repair might involve one wall clip or offset bend; replacement can include the pipe lengths, sockets, hopper and shoe. The end of the pipe matters as much as the top connection, because water still needs somewhere suitable to go.

- The shoe is missing, or water lands beside rather than over the gully
Details that change the proposed work
An offset carries the pipe past projecting eaves before it runs down the wall. Its bends, diameter and connections must suit the outlet and pipe system. Wall clips hold the assembly in position; they should not be relied on to force badly aligned sockets together. Heavy metal pipework needs appropriately designed supports.
A backed-up gully or underground drain can mimic a downpipe fault. Renewing the pipe will not clear a blockage below it. Rainwater and foul-water arrangements differ between properties, so an existing connection should not be redirected casually. Shared hoppers and pipes also need agreement with whoever is responsible for them.

Will a new downpipe fix a blocked underground drain?
No. A blockage below ground needs its own investigation and clearance. Ask the contractor to establish where the restriction lies before paying for pipe replacement.
Can the pipe discharge somewhere else on the property?
A different route needs assessment of drainage suitability and any permissions or shared responsibilities. Moving the shoe onto a path or beside the wall is not a substitute for a suitable discharge point.
